Why am I writing this? When I first went online to buy bonsai trees there weren’t any real reviews or helpful information out there.

So I thought I’d write a quick review to help any of you who are in the same position I was in to buy bonsai trees online the right way.

When you buy bonsai trees online there are certain inherit problems that come with it. For example, you cannot touch the bonsai tree or spin it around and look at “the other side” of the picture. You can’t feel the soil or look under the leaves. This makes it much more difficult to pick out and buy bonsai trees.

DON’T Buy Bonsai Trees Online… Until You Read This!

Before you buy bonsai trees online…you should ask these specific questions!

If this is your first bonsai tree, you might want to start with a younger less expensive one so you can learn as you go, through trial and error. You don’t want to buy bonsai trees that are really expensive to practice on or possibly kill them

However, if you want to jump right in and buy bonsai trees that are older and more refined that is fine too. The older and the more character the bonsai tree has the more expensive it will be. This is because the perceived value is higher. So if you want the best…buy bonsai trees that are much older and have a lot of character.

You can also start and grow your own bonsai tree from seed or from cuttings from other trees. Although this can be a slow process and will take some patience. It’s for this reason I prefer to buy bonsai trees that are what we call a ”finished bonsai tree” and continue where someone better at starting bonsai trees than myself left off! :)

If you decide to buy bonsai trees that are already a little older, you should know what to ask the grower to find out if the tree is a healthy one.

You should ask how long it has been in the bonsai pot you are buying. If it has recently been repotted the bonsai soil will be somewhat loose in the pot. You do not want that. The longer it has been planted without being disturbed the better. So my advice is to buy bonsai trees that have been planted in the same pot and the same soil for at least a couple of years.

You also want to ask if the bonsai soil is a good open mix, if it’s not it might be water logged, which is not healthy for the tree either. So again only buy bonsai trees that have been planted in a nice open mix soil for a long period of time.

If the tree has bonsai training wire on the trunk or the branches it will be fine but make sure it is NOT cutting into the bark. If they have left the wire in the same spot for too long it will cut into the tree as it grows and this will damage the bonsai tree. So do NOT buy bonsai trees that are damaged by bonsai training wire.

If you buy bonsai trees online you will want to stress the fact that the picture of the tree you are thinking of buying is the actual tree you will receive! (Some growers do not update their pic’s and will just ship a tree of the same kind) Look closely at the picture, does it look healthy? If so take the plunge and buy bonsai trees online and begin your bonsai growing experience.

If you decide not to grow bonsai trees you can still own one. You can buy bonsai trees that are preserved or artificial!

You can purchase artificial bonsai trees or an authentic “preserved bonsai tree” that look amazing but without all the fuss of the real thing. So now you have a choice, buy bonsai trees that are live, or buy an artificial or preserved one, choices are good.

Bonsai Tools-what to use and why!

This is a short list of Bonsai Tools you’ll need to make your bonsai growing experience even better/easier.

There are a lot of bonsai tools you will end up acquiring as you go along. However, there are really only a handful of bonsai tools you’ll use as your “working” set of tools on a regular basis.

You must have a pair of Japanese wire cutters (or any small wire cutters will do, they just won’t be “bonsai tools”) to use when shaping your bonsai tree with shaping wire.

Scissors are a must for your bonsai tools collection as well. There are a few different kind of scissors you will want to check out. First, there are leaf scissors, these are really precise for intricate cutting. Second, is your shoot trimming scissors, these are a little bigger for trimming new shoots on your bonsai tree that you do not want. Then there is a heavy duty pair for pruning the roots of your tree. I would not recommend using regular scissors for bonsai tools, they will damage your bonsai trees.

Also, for pruning your tree you will need a pair of branch cutters, these will make a concave cut that helps the bonsai tree to heal better and faster. Another of the bonsai tools just for pruning is the knob cutter. You can use these to remove branches as well or remove a branch stub up close to the trunk. These are invaluable bonsai tools to have.

You should also have a nice sharp gardeners knife to make good clean cuts to help avoid a disease or a fungal infection. (You should always use bonsai wound sealer when making any kind of wound on you tree) You will also use the gardeners knife to make Jin. Jin means a dead branch with no bark that creates the look and feel of age that gives the bonsai tree more character and perceived value. You wouldn’t normally think of a gardeners knives as bonsai tools, however they work great and are an important part of your bonsai tools collection.

You will need bonsai wire for shaping the tree and pliers to work with the wire. Now wire isn’t really considered bonsai tools however, you must have it to shape and grow your bonsai tree. Therefore wire and pliers would be a necessity and should be included in our collection of bonsai tools.

These will be your basic bonsai tools that if you get quality tools, will last a very long time and work perfectly, making your bonsai gardening much more fun and a lot easier.

The bonsai tools I’ve mentioned above are only the main tools you will use on a daily basis, you will most likely acquire more as you go along. You may want to purchase these before or at the same time you buy bonsai trees.
